In the general news, Russia and the U.S. are in discussions to gradually replace the Syrian regime of al-Assad. In the U.S., Paul Ryan took over as Speaker of the House. Apple sold 48 million iPhones in the previous quarter alone. The Mets somehow made it to the World Series, and Triple Crown winning horse American Pharoah retired after wining The Breeder’s Cup.

In healthcare business news, The biggest year for M&A ever continues as Walgreens Boots Alliance (WBS) plans to merge with Rite Aid (RAD) to control the vast majority of the market, and Pfizer (PFE) is in talks to buy Allergan(AGN). Recall, Allergan was just acquitted last year by Actavis.

On the earnings front, Edwards (EW) and AbbVie (ABBV) both beat estimates. Endologix (ELGX) tanked on bad numbers.

On the data front, Amgen (AMGN) and Cytokinetics (CYTK) posted good data on heart failure drug omecamtiv mecarbil. Agios (AGIO) posted good data on cancer drug AG-120. Lastly, Macrocure’s (MCUR) drug to cellular therapy CureXcell failed to treat chronic wounds.
