The Weekly Summary

April 27th – May 3rd                                 2020

In the general news, overseas, Kim Jong-un of North Korea resurfaced after a long period of hiding, likely due to a serious illness. Also, Sweden claims to have developed herd immunity to the Wuhan virus as a result of not implementing “social distancing” and house arrests. Also, Secretary of State Mike Pompeo stated that ample evidence indicates the virus came from China.

In the U.S., demonstrations continued at state capitols where the house-arrest orders are in still place. Elon Musk said that the orders were fascist. New York Governor Cuomo seemed to double down on the stupidity, sending NYPD out to violently arrest and beat up people who did nothing wrong other than ignoring his king-like edicts. However, many other states began to end the house-arrest orders. Attorney General Barr said that his DOJ will begin to act if states violate civil liberties. And lastly, as a result of the virus closures, the U.S. economy shrank by 5% for the first quarter, but the stock markets rebounded due to the Fed lowering interest rates to zero.

In healthcare news, even after it was reported that Governor Cuomo had ordered sick and infected elderly in the hospital to be offloaded back to nursing homes, to infect others, he continued the policy. Some estimates have at least 25% of the deaths coming from nursing home settings. In the poorly run hospitals in the boroughs of New York, untrained staff are killing people by failing to operate ventilators properly. Meanwhile, the entire healthcare system across the nation has nearly stopped treating non-virus disease.

In healthcare business news, Gilead’s (GILD) was approved for sick hospitalized patients infected by the Wuhan virus after a study met endpoints. Also, a Roche antibody test was approved.
